Sony very happy with early sales of PlayStation Vita

The long-awaited PlayStation Vita (PSV), which launched yesterday across both the United States and Europe, is finding plenty of traction with consumers, according to a seemingly satisfied Sony.

Specifically, Sony America boss Jack Tretton has said early PSV retail data is “very, very positive” and that sales of memory cards and videogame software are also strong.

“Memory is going out the door very aggressively, despite the fact that memory is in a lot of the presale bundles,” he told IGN. “The software appears to be selling quite well top to bottom.”

Citing the effectiveness of Sony’s marketing campaign, merchandising exposure, and promotional focus, Tretton was also keen to say he feels great “about the velocity that we have going into Vita.”

In terms of transforming that velocity into the ringing of cash registers, Tretton said he’d be happy if U.S. sales for the first three weeks of availability matched those amassed during the Vita’s unveiling in Japan.

That would equate to console sales somewhere in the vicinity of 500,000 units, which the Sony boss described as “a real healthy number for a new platform launch.”

    > seruly there?ll be certain things one can do in the PS3> that will be cheap in terms of labour timeI don’t have a strong sense as to how much more true that is on the PS3 than on the Xbox 360. It was rumored only recently that the PS3 had serious (among other problems challenging the platform, like lack of an online service comparable to Live!). Meanwhile, Microsoft is putting a lot of energy into tools and developer support. At any rate, I’m definitely not counting Sony out, nor dismissing the quality of the hardware. Just wondering if that hardware will make a difference anytime in the next couple of years.
