Epic: Unreal Engine 4 will have “profound effect”

While you might think that Unreal Engine is perhaps getting a little long in the tooth, its creators over at Epic Games are keen to stress the platform’s revamped fourth iteration will prove otherwise.

More pointedly, Epic boss Mark Rein has told G4TV that “people are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have.”

Related reports also quote Rein in suggesting that Unreal 4 is already out in the industry wilderness running on various hardware platforms “including systems we can’t name yet.”

Given that Unreal Engine 3 is a staple ingredient in software running on current systems such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it’s likely Rein’s comments point towards developmental usage in forthcoming next-gen hardware.

Epic should formally unveil Unreal Engine 4 during this year’s E3 Expo in Los Angeles. In the meantime, take a look at the following Unreal tech demo that highlights the quality leap Epic expects to produce in the near future.
