PlayStation Vita sales plunge again in Japan

Oh dear, the PlayStation Vita has been available at retailers (in Japan) for just shy of three weeks, and it would already appear that its honeymoon period with consumers is well and truly over.

Specifically, having shifted a massive 325,000 units within a few days of launch, Andriasang reports that sales of the touch-screen portable plunged to around 72,000 at the close of its first full week, and now stand at a paltry 42,648 sales as week two fades from view.

If such plummeting consumer enthusiasm wasn’t splashing enough egg on Sony’s face, its collective executives are likely wiping at yoke furiously following news that the original PlayStation Portable continues to outsell the Vita.

It’s also worth noting that Nintendo’s 3DS console, which many industry watchers had written off as a flop, sold 197,592 units this week—a solid show of sustained momentum following the record-breaking 482,000 units sold over Christmas.

With the Vita seemingly flagging in the marketplace, it’s also no surprise to note that Sony’s new device isn’t represented in the list of Japan’s top ten software titles, while the 3DS has five.

The only Vita titles of note in the chart are Hot Shots Golf, which sits at 26, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which is at 29.

Sony has not yet offered any official comment regarding the rapid decline in Vita sales.
